What is Forest School?
Forest School is an inspiring, child-centred approach to outdoor play and learning.
Forest Schools in Britain began in the mid-1990s, influenced by the Scandinavian educational philosophy that considers children’s contact with nature to be extremely important for their development.
A Forest School programme maximises the learning potential of local woodlands or natural outdoor spaces through regular and planned visits throughout the year. These consistent experiences allow children to build a strong relationship with the natural environment over time.
The woodland environment allows children to grow in confidence, independence and self-esteem, while also learning how to assess and manage risk in a safe and supportive way.
With the freedom of exploration within the site the children learn to become independent and responsible for themselves, their peers, and the environment.
Our sessions are led by a qualified Forest School Leader and are planned to be structured not directive. Activities are designed to be achievable, meaningful and aligned with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
Learning is hands-on and led by curiosity, using natural materials and available resources. Traditional woodland tools are introduced gradually and safely, helping children to develop practical skills, respect for tools and an understanding of how to use them responsibly.

A number of studies have shown Forest Schools:
- Increase self esteem and self confidence
- Help develop physical skills
- Demonstrate an improved relationship with and understanding of the outdoors
- Increase levels of creativity and imagination
- Improve motivation, focus and concentration
- Support the development of language and communication skills
